• Groups returning to St Peter’s church

St Peter’s church is starting to welcome back some of its regular groups.  From September, Mini-Maestros children’s music classes will be     returning, along with the community choir, knit & natter and the lunch club.

Next month, we hope the scouts will be returning, as well as Children’s Ark, the Rodillians choir, our coffee mornings and maybe the film club.  It will be a bit longer until the Rainbows and Brownies return, and the Alternative Care disabled adults’ drama group.

Before returning, all groups are having to think very carefully about their activities, and how to ensure social distancing and minimise risks to members.  It all takes a lot of planning, and St Peter’s church has produced some guidance for groups to help the process.

  • Church Services – Sept/Oct 2020

The “Rule of 6” didn’t bring any significant changes to Church services. Below is the advice from the Church of England:

Public worship can continue. There is an exemption that covers places of worship making it possible for more than six people to gather for acts of communal worship. However, it is not a blanket exemption. People must not be part of a group of more than six unless they are from the same household or support bubble.

So we continue to meet in a COVID-19 secure way every Sunday at 10am.

  • Hopes & Dreams – Summer 2019

St Peter’s Church will be staging three performances of the musical ‘Hopes & Dreams’ on Friday 5th July, Saturday 6th July and Sunday 7th July 2019.  The musical was written by Paul Field in 1998 and was enormously successful at the time.  It features ‘The Millennium Prayer’: the words of the Lord’s Prayer set to the tune of Auld Lang Syne which was recorded by Cliff Richard and gave him a number one hit single.

St Peter’s has staged the musical twice before; originally in November 2002 in Stanley Community Centre and again in April 2011 to celebrate 10 years since our move from the old church to our new building. Even more than 20 years after it was written, the music is still so powerful that we felt it was time to revisit it, and stage it again for a new audience.

The whole musical is based on the Lord’s Prayer, and uses the themes of creation, forgiveness, temptation among others as the inspiration for the songs, poems, dances and drama. We have a brilliant team of people busy rehearsing for the performances in the summer. Details of ticket sales will be released nearer the time.

  • Pantomime 2017 – Cinderella

The well-known pantomime story is given the typical St Peter’s church makeover! The wicked Baroness and her three extremely ugly daughters make Cinderella’s life a misery, but they can’t stop her dreaming about meeting her prince and being rescued from drudgery. “Cinderella” includes the usual terrible jokes, silly songs, great costumes and props that you’ve come to expect. We hope you can join us for another successful and hilarious pantomime.
